workin' it wednesdays: keeping your marriage strong

I am so excited to be joining Erika and Shay for their monthly link-up called Workin' It Wednesdays!  In honor of Valentine's Day, today's topic is all about keeping your marriage strong.

Bobby and I will celebrate thirteen years of marriage this year, which absolutely blows me away!  I just cannot believe how fast time goes.  I am going to sound completely cheesy here and say that I love being married and that I have a pretty incredible husband.  But yes, he does have flaws, I most certainly have flaws, and our marriage is not perfect.  We have been through some very difficult times, because life happens.  We chose to let those things grow us and strengthen our marriage, but it's not always easy.

One of the most important things that I think we do is that we remember we are on the same team.  We honestly don't really fight, because why would I want to fight with someone who is on my side?  We might disagree and have a discussion about something, but at the end of the discussion we will either come to an agreement or agree to disagree.  Either way, we both listen to each other because we respect each other and value each other's opinions, and we both come away feeling like we have been heard.  There's no yelling or arguing or trying to "win" a fight, because if I win, then he loses.  And why would I ever want my husband to lose?

Along with being on the same team is teamwork.  Life can get so busy and hectic; sometimes it feels like we're just coming and going and trying to keep up with it all!  But knowing that there is someone who is always is my corner, someone who has my back and will pick up my slack, and vise versa - there is just so much peace in that.

We also talk a lot.  About everything and about nothing!  Because how can we talk about the hard things when they come up if we aren't already used to talking with each other?  Constant communication that is open and honest is so important.

And above all?  Pray.  Pray for each other and pray for your marriage.  And then pray some more.

Marriage is hard because life is hard, but it is so, so worth it!  I sure am thankful that I get to do life with this man of mine.

Today we are celebrating our wedding anniversary, so I am sharing a boatload of favorite pictures from some of my favorite moments with my very favorite guy!

Eleven years ago today, we said "I do."  It's been beautiful and messy and lovely and difficult, because marriage is hard.  Marriage is hard because life is hard - there's just no getting around it.  But through all of the trials and heartaches, the joys and the triumphs, this man is by my side.  We choose to love each other day after day.  I am walking though life with my best friend, and I am so very thankful.

I love you, Robert Lee, and I will choose to love you for all of my days.

Linking up with Erika, Andrea, and Narci today for Friday Favorites.

a decade

Today is our ten year anniversary.

For ten years I have had the amazing privilege of walking alongside this man and doing life with him.  It has gone by so incredibly fast, and it seems like forever ago.  I'm a sentimental, emotional woman, so of course I can't help but think back to where we started and where we are now.  We've been through so much together.  There's been a lot of ups and downs.....maybe a few more downs than we bargained for.  But I know that God is writing our story, and I know that he has wonderful plans for us individually, for us as a couple, and for our family.  I know that there are more blessings and more trials in our future, and I know that we will weather it all together.

I love this life that we've built.  I love this family that we've made.  I love this journey that we are on.

And I really, really love this man of mine.

nine years

We are celebrating nine years of marriage today.

How . is . that . possible ?

Looking back through our pictures, I really do feel like it wasn't so very long ago...and yet, a lifetime ago. We have done a lot of living since then, and somewhere along the way, we found our stride.  We've figured out our give-and-take, our ebb-and-flow, and we've settled into what marriage is for us. And I gotta say, I kind of love it.

We have faced more trials and heartache than my 23-year-old self ever could have imagined.  But we have also been blessed beyond measure, and life has been more full and more beautiful than I ever dreamed.  I don't know what lies ahead for us, but I do know who will be by my side for the ride.

I love you, Robert Lee.  You have my whole heart for my whole life.
